Controversy surrounds Virginia-based Band Soja were awarded Best Reggae Album for their Reggae Album “Beauty In Silence”; at the 64th Annual Granmy Awards on April 3rd, 2022.

Following this announcement there were several expressions of disappointment and outrage from some Jamaican musicians, including from Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Spice, Shenseea as well as from producer Foota Hype. Bounty Killer wrote in an Instagram post, “What a big piece a sell out gwaan ya so white folks winning best reggae album over Jamaicans wtf🤔.”
However Shaggy maintained that the Recording Academy was not to be blamed and that artists themselves should play their role by registering with the organization, so that they can cast votes.”
The Grammy Winners Soja as part of their acceptance speech did however paid homage in saying: “To the founding fathers of reggae music and to the island of Jamaica, you inspired us all.”
A member of the band also said onstage in a somewhat Jamaican impersonation. “Give thanks, one love.”
